And you thought you were a computer Idiot

04 Dec

Over the last couple of days I am sure you have noticed a series of test messages or posts (and the promise of more) coming from “Dealing with COPD.”  This is my effort to ensure you that you’re not the dumbest person using a computer.  I believe I have worked hard enough, and have proven my skill set completely.

For more than 30 years I worked for the government, thru the contracting activities I was involved with, the government spent 100’s of millions of dollars procuring telecommunications equipment and services. These contracts saved the government and tax payers billions and billions of dollars.  I am extremely proud of this, these saving and other projects I worked on were the highlight of my career.  But I don’t believe I ever bought a computer for the government.  I never acquired computer training for the government, or install services at all.  Maybe I should have been a bit more sensitive to that aspect of government acquisition process, at least I would have my own computer geek I could call and say “Yes I screwed it up, come fix it, Please!

It was suggested to me that if I posted my Dealing With COPD blog on FB I had the potential to draw in more followers.  I also had the potential to make it easier for folks who wanted to comment on my blog.  This could allow those who were not part of WordPress a point of entrance to provide comments and feedback, without having to create a WordPress account.  In theory it is a great idea, one I completely embrace, but an idea I am having the DEVIL of a time implementing.

Having said all of that, the feedback I have gotten from various TEST messages has been fantastic.  The interest in helping with this endeavor has been wonderful and the advice great.  These stupid little test messages have generated numerous comments, and tons of good will and good intentions.  For those of you who sent suggestions I have tried them all.  I have tried to response to each comment on this issue just as I try to reply to any comment I get.  Opening the mailbox and seeing comment after comment has made me smile, laugh and snicker.  I really has been a joy.  Hell I mind even start doing a weekly test message just for the comments alone.  What a series of nonsense posts that would be.  Imagine what could come from such a series.  It is just a consideration folks, but it could be good filler. LOL LOL

Back to the problem, being anal retentive to a degree, I have read reread then read again the instructions for sharing.  No matter what I have done to date, my posts always appear on the public Bill Hamilton Facebook page.  Sometimes they actually appear on the Dealing With COPD Facebook page that was created specifically for them, but sometimes they don’t.   The reason this is an issue at all, is that I believe that there should be a separation between where I play on Facebook, and the serious nature of my posts on COPD.  Besides I don’t want my neighbors knowing all my secrets.

Focusing again to the issue at hand, I have added to the dilemma by not tracking the variety of changes I have made to the settings in an effort to make it work (so much for being anal).  So I am having a very difficult time recreating all of my screw-ups, which in turn means I am destined to make them again.  But this time I will track them, and I will learn from each mistake.  Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.  Ruff ruff !!!!

My next step will be to contact the help desks at both WordPress and Facebook and explain my issue, maybe between them I can find a solution.  It is still a problem in progress.  Should you ever see my posts appearing on Facebook, that will be a clear indication that I have (with the help of 100’s) resolved the problem.  If you don’t that just means I am still spinning my wheels and not making progress.

Thanks folks for making this effort something that is easy to tolerate.  Without your help, suggestions, encouragement, and smiling faces, who knows where this would go.  As always if you have any suggestions, comments or concerns, please contact me.  Have a great day, and Take care, Bill.

Well by golly…. let me add to this again! 🙂 Do you use different emails for your different Facebook pages? And are you signed out of the Facebook you DONT want to use when you are trying to get your blog connected to Facebook?

Colleen, I am not sure I know how to answer your question. I only have 1 facebook account, created a couple 3 yrs ago. My facebook page dealing with copd is a managed page off the prime facebook account. When I established the Facebook page Dealing with COPD, I created an email address that is different from email address ham1010. But I think that facebook will only use the Ham1010. I will look further into this, and I will not give up. Take care, Bill

Colleen, Smiling I am convinced I with the support of a bunch of friends and followers will get this resolved. What started as a single individual’s problem has become a community effort to resolve. That is amazing and wonderful. When it is all said and done one of my 1st posts will be a Thank You to all the folks that stepped in to help. Take care, Bill

🙂 I can’t wait. I know it’s confusing. Here’s something that might be messing it up too…. It used to be I could hit the “facebook” button at the bottom of my post and it would post it on facebook. But once they made changes it no longer does that, it just puts a “1” next to the facebook button that someone hit the button. I have to copy and past to my FB.

Colleen, When the dust settles, and I have a clear positive way to do this, I will share it so you can as well. Trust me, smarter people than me are working to help me solve this, actually I am trying to stay out of their way. Take care, Bill

Wow, you are brave. I’ve just been posting to my private Facebook account, and refusing to cross-pollinate the facebook list from WP. I’ve thought about creating a more public author page, but haven’t been brave enough. One of my friends had her page cloned, and I’m unsure of the facebook security. I like that you are sorting this out.

      December 5, 2013 at 3:49 pm

Brenda, Who knows, in the end I may in fact have to create a completely different Facebook page to accommodate my Blog Dealing with COPD. If that is the case I am okay with it, as long as I make it easier for folks to read my blog and take some encouragement when I post COPD Posts. The outpouring of support is beyond believe. What started as a personal PIA, has become a cause to be fixed by my many supporters, it is truly wonderful. Thanks for your continued good vibes and encouragement. — Bill

Ah, I think part of it is the emails on your two fb pages being different. I didn’t do that, Bill. In fact, my blog on WP, and both pages on FB (personal & blog promo) all use the same email. Tickled that you’ve kept going. another crazy obsessive….:)

Hunt, The effort continues, thank you so much for including Rara into the quest. I am sure that a good solution will be worked out. Smiling, all this has done is slow down my reading of your blog. Take care, Bill

Hey, Bill…. your picture has changed to some little green, horned demon – I think you’ve messed with your Widgets again… unless, you don’t want to look like Santa during Santa’s season?

I still need to look at your more recent test posts, but I had to let you know that this post lightened my day. I had a problem with Excel today that I couldn’t seem to solve on my own–at least not within my deadline–so I contacted a colleague to see whether he had any suggestions. He responded within just a few minutes with a reasonable workaround. More experimentation ensued, after which I realized that I’d been on the right track all along. It all boiled down to the difference between a single-click and a double-click in Excel! I will be able to pick up in the morning where I left off today, confident that I can accomplish this task.

On a more personal note, I’ve been having some problems with my Outlook app not functioning as it once did. Fortunately Dean, our family’s very own computer geek, was here last weekend and fixed that little malfunction in about 2 minutes!

So…you aren’t alone in your computer woes. I do hope your linkup with Facebook works out because I firmly believe your COPD posts offer a lot–at a minimum, a dose of reality mixed in with some encouragement and good humor.

P.S. I’d offer to come over there (as in “do I have to come over there??”) but I don’t think I could offer anything you aren’t already working. Go you!!

Wanda, I had just about called you and begging for assistance, but what started off as a simple task took a life of it’s own. I had a ton of interest, and 2 tons of suggestions, and now have a “Computer Specialist” working we me to solving it. I have been blessed by so many online it is amazing. And on top of all this I have a post to write about the experience. It will be great. As you can see by this email address I am starting a process to separate blog stuff from regular stuff. I have redirected all blog notices from Ham1010 to this email. I am not the least bit surprised that you were so close, and all you needed was a little nudge. Oh I know I am not alone, that makes the journey that much more fun. I enjoy making fun of it, and having a little fun as it gets fixed. Take care, Bill, xox
